Why Bregenz
State capital and economic hub on Lake Constance
Bregenz is the state capital of Vorarlberg, sitting directly on Lake Constance at the junction of the Rhine Valley and the four-country corner. According to the official "Daten & Fakten" by Bregenz Tourism, the city has around 29,600 primary residences and roughly 2,330 workplaces; about 19,300 people work here, of whom, per the city, some 58 percent commute in. That commuter share underlines Bregenz as the region's work and administrative center.
AI research in the region: Digital Factory Vorarlberg
The AI link comes from the region itself: in neighbouring Dornbirn, the Digital Factory Vorarlberg runs a competence and transfer centre for digitalization at Campus V. By its own account it is a joint venture of the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology and FH Vorarlberg. "Data analysis and artificial intelligence" is one of its stated research fields, alongside wireless technologies, digital manufacturing and cyber security — applied AI expertise right in Vorarlberg's four-country corner.
Bregenz Festival: a world-class stage since 1946
Culturally, Bregenz is defined above all by its festival: per the official festival site, the Wiener Symphoniker have spent every summer as Orchestra in Residence on Lake Constance "since the festival's founding in 1946." In 2026 the festival marks its 80th anniversary; the season runs 22 July to 23 August 2026 with Verdi's "La traviata" on the Seebühne. This international stage makes Bregenz an established event venue — a strong setting for ahead x city.
