Why Graz
Semiconductor hub on the Alpine axis
Graz hosts an office of Silicon Alps Cluster GmbH, Austria's high-tech network for electronic and software-based systems. By its own account, the cluster has connected Styria and Carinthia since around 2016 and, alongside its Villach headquarters, runs an office at Inffeldgasse 33 in Graz. In 2026 the network marks its tenth anniversary. Its focus areas span smart sensor systems, power electronics and cyber security.
Research for trustworthy AI
Graz is home to the Know Center, which describes itself as a "leading European innovation and research center for trustworthy AI and data science." Know Center Research GmbH, based at Sandgasse 34, works on fields such as methods and algorithms for AI, data privacy, human-AI interaction and fair AI. This roots the AI theme of ahead x city in a place where AI research and a university setting genuinely converge.

UNESCO World Heritage meets City of Design
Graz's old town has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1 December 1999; in 2010 the area was extended to include Schloss Eggenberg, giving the city two World Heritage zones. Since 2011 Graz has also held the UNESCO City of Design title. Against this backdrop of historic architecture and design focus, ahead x city takes place in the Skyroom above the city's rooftops – a real venue that visibly links location and cityscape.
